Sometimes the best camera is the one that you have in your hand. My son and I were flying back home to Sacramento from Chicago. As we approached Sacramento near sunset I looked out the window and there was the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta magnificently illuminated, the Coastal Range in the distance. I knew immediately that I was seeing something special. I also knew that there was not enough time to pull out the full frame Canon Digital that was in the bag just under the seat. I had a Canon G-9 in my hand though and enough confidence in it to line up the shot and snap off a few frames. Would I have liked more resolution and a smoother file? Sure, but I’m pretty happy with what I got.

These are photos I made of local leaders and businessmen during interviews for a Sacramento business magazine. I work with Rich Ehisen who always draws out the subjects with great informed questions, and I shoot with existing light whenever possible to avoid interrupting the spirited conversation. I put up a backdrop to eliminate background distractions and give the regular column a clean, consistent look. These shoots are fun, the things I am looking for through the lens are simple but vital, thought, gesture, emotion, posture, amusement and concern. My goal is to come away with a picture that gives the viewer a sense of what it was like to be in the room.
